Okay, I know that probably there is no time of the week that would be better. I know that no matter what time you choose, some large group of faculty will complain. But, honestly, there has to be a better time for a faculty meeting than 4:00 pm on a Friday afternoon, doesn't there?

I agree! People are "free" on Fridays for a reason--because they need a day without obligations to take care of things. I can understand (albeit with gritted teeth) why people outside academia think that not having class means we're "off" and assume that we are using that time for leisure. But our colleagues who schedule faculty meetings (should) know better.
September 20, 2008 at 8:56 AMAlso, even in the 9-5 world a 4 pm Friday meeting would meet resistance.
What is frustrating is that the faculty meeting I'm thinking of was for our full college, and yet one of the things we see is that pretty much the only faculty who show up are of the untenured variety. I've got a colleague who I don't believe has made it to one of these since I've been here.
