This one's for Adjunct Whore, who could use a bit of hope.
The specter of racism isn't so ghostly and immaterial in this race, and there's certainly plenty of reason to be concerned. But I think there's some cause for hope. While I've grown to hate the term "Joe Sixpack" the way I hate "What happens in _______ stays in ______," there are some Joe Sixpacks in this audience who've got their heads on straight.

Damn. That is some seriously fired-up speaking. I love it. You know, "middle class" identity is not going to get anyone fired up like this. But get the workers going, show them they have their own future in their hands, and stand back.
October 13, 2008 at 5:09 PM"Brothers and sisters" -- man, I love that old-school union talk.
thanks, really, thanks so much. i just got finished reading about how "electrifying" Palin is, how much people love her and want her to be president, i was just about to grab my kids and run.

One of the places that gives me a bit of hope has actually been my freshmen this term, who have been politically involved and who have offered some critique of the process themselves.
October 14, 2008 at 5:00 PMI keep hearing stories about Palin, too, but they seem increasingly desperate somehow. And, of course, there are people who like Larry the Cable Guy, but thankfully, there don't seem to be enough of them to make him more than an annoyance. I hope it'll be the same with Sarah Palin.
