Sure, there's a lot of serious things happening in academia, and I'm on the job market, and my students are freaking out.
But - particularly as I'm about to head to yet another Friday afternoon administrative meeting - I don't want to spend a moment talking about any of those things. And also, I note that the level of commenting has dropped off on my blog and on many others, and this bothers me a little because, really, who wants to just shout out into the void?
Clearly, for both of these reasons, something pointless and fun is required.
So I'm thinking lots about mix-tapes and CDs lately and, in a conversation the other night, was trying to get to what the cheesiest 1980s's pop I-like-you song would actually be. Be prepared to support your answers. I won't give my pick(s) since I'm (often) obtuse in these things and so it once took an entire mix tape of songs for me to clue in to just how much someone liked me.

I switched to RSS, which means both that I am nearly ALWAYS reading but almost never commenting. Although, do you really need comment moderation and to disallow the NameURL option, both things that reduce my commenting.
November 14, 2008 at 11:04 PMOh a song. How about Janet Jackson, He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive, to get it started (maybe. Moderation means i cant tell). Key lyric involves calling but hanging up before he answers.
Interesting song picks.
November 15, 2008 at 9:50 PMI thought I'd actually loosened up the posting restrictions. I'll have to check again to make sure there haven't been any recent Blogger changes I've missed.
My pick is "Strange But True" by Times Two. MTV showed the video quite often in the late 80s.
November 15, 2008 at 9:55 PMSample lyrics: "Strange but true ... I think I've got a thing for you..."
I'm not sure if this is exactly the category you're after, but I would offer "Let's Here it for the Boy" by someone whose name I can't remember, just for the cheese factor.
November 16, 2008 at 9:43 PMIt's a wide open category. And wasn't that by Denise Williams?
November 16, 2008 at 11:10 PMgood grief...for some reason i can't seem to access memories of the 1980s at the moment. (the optimistic part of me--and yes, there is an optimistic part of me, believe it or not!--wants to think that maybe the election signaled the end of reaganism and that all my memories of that period vanished with its stinking remnants. or maybe i am just drawing a blank on cheesy 80s pop.)
November 17, 2008 at 10:53 AMAlways tricky to be put on the musical spot. But the jump to politics and that you might be blocking it and Reaganism out, taking 80s pop with you, is why I love talking music. Amazing how it gets folded into everything else.
November 17, 2008 at 11:34 AMAnyway, I bet a song comes to you later in the day.
hmmm, not quite 80s, but i love nirvana's "love buzz." not cheezy either, sorry, at least i don't think so.
November 20, 2008 at 5:48 PMwhat about squeeze, "take me i'm yours," and love and rockets, "alive."
okay, maybe i'm 0/2 on the cheeze. for a lover whom you will have to travel from, i suggest glass tiger's "don't forget me when i'm gone," for the agony of being away from the lover (although probably more of a break up song), i suggest def leopard's "love bites" (isn't it def leopard?); stacy q's "two of hearts"; debbie gibson, "lost in your eyes." a little gnr, "sweet child of mine." oh and of course, no cheezy love mix would be complete without michael bolton's "love is a wonderful thing."
