That sucks. Sometimes it's worse knowing that you were so close, even if it's meant to be a good sign. Perhaps it's the universe's way of keeping you available for a job that would be even better? (Sorry, I know that's not terribly helpful.)
I did my sulking, and then I found a job to apply for in Paris which I expect I won't get - I think I've mentioned my inability to speak French - but man, that'll be fun to imagine for awhile.
Ugh. Been there, beat head against that wall. And who knows? Paris is possible. I did it, and I didn't speak French then either. Do now. Great experience. Go for it.
