Sometimes You Get the Honey, Sometimes All You Get is the Sting

So somehow I got outflanked today, and I think I got suckered into having to attend one of the dog-and-pony show events I was complaining about in the previous post. Of course, it took one of the secretaries to do it, so I don't feel so bad since they are, by and large, smarter than any two faculty and administrators put together.

But I've suddenly got the possibility of switching from my crappy IT-chosen computer to a Mac (though when they see what I say I need for it, that may evaporate). I'm still not sure whether I want to make the switch since all my software is currently PC-based. But it's damn tempting, I've got to say.

Oh, go for it. After a lifetime of PC defending, I must say that I love my macs. I now have two, and can't imagine going back. And most of my files transferred easily. Those that didn't, I simply moved to a word doc and those open on the Mac.

The only thing I really lost forever was a complex index in Lotus 1-2-3. It wouldn't translate into either a WPD database or anything MS turns out. Luckily, I have a hard copy, but still.

The big question is whether the school will pay for a laptop that will do what I need. The real problem with Macs is the price. But the research I've done today looks good in terms of being able to run PC software and files.

Macs are totally worth it. Since I've never owned anything else, I've never thought much about the "too expensive" argument; to me, that's what computers cost. And I've always seen it as paying for not crap. Every Mac I've ever owned has been dreamy and none of them--not one ever--has given me a moment's trouble. So worth it.

It's the danger of institutional logic, really. I've made a similar argument, but when you've got to get approval and funds from three different places to do anything other than the school standard, it becomes a nightmare.

I think, though, they're going to make the leap. We'll see.

Do it by all means (assuming you can get them to pay for it). I use Parallels for pc programs I absolutely need.
