Gah. Sorry. I'll be joining you next year, if it's any consolation...

Sorry, Dr. C. I hope drowning your sorrows in BSG and liquor is temporarily effective.

Thanks for all the sympathy. BSG (no liquor for me tonight, though) did help a bit.

I sort of felt it was doomed when my mother said "I've been praying for your job prospects." An awful feeling to have to someone's good sentiments, I suppose, but there it is.

Maggie, you're going on the market next year?

Man, that sucks. You seem to be pretty philosophical about it all, but don't count liquor out in the coming days, as needed :)

It's a little - but only a little - easier to be philosophical about it, knowing the odds on these things.

Eventually I'll try to focus on having made two campus interviews out of the limited applications this year, and maybe I'll remember the schools were pretty impressive ones. But I don't think that'll ever hold much water since it feels a bit like having your mom reassure you that you're smart.

For now, the next big thing will be to try and figure out how to make another year here livable and (maybe) more marketable.

So: next year!

Yup. Probably for the next 3 years, actually (because I am going to be wicked selective about where I apply, etc.) And, like you, I am contemplating leaving academia. For many of the same reasons you are.

So, you see why I read your blog with such rapt attention :)

That shocks me - I always feel like you're living the dream. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, though. I'm shocked though - I thought everyone read my blog because of my muscular blog physique.

Ah, well.

Well, of course your physique is part of the draw.

"Living the dream" --- hahahahahahaha!

My discontent is mainly geographical. But place is important enough to me that it makes my life pretty un-dreamlike...
