Finals progress

So grades for one of the four courses are completed and ready to be submitted. And my chapter is off to the editors (as a side note, what rotten planning, putting a deadline right in the middle of what is pretty much everyone everywhere's finals period. Remind me not to do this if I'm ever an editor of a collection).

I think perhaps it's time for a beer and some inappropriate Christmas card message-writing.

I think this would be a good blog meme: the christmas letter you WANT to send.

Hmmm. I feel like I've seen or heard that idea elsewhere. I've actually never really received a Christmas letter, so I only know them by inference.

I guess if I did one, I'd either need to see someone try it first or I'd have to write a snarky letter to Santa.

You've never received one of those letters, usually from a family member, that describes all the wonder and glory that is their Nuclear Family Unit? How Bob just got promoted, and Bobby Jr. just got awarded some science prize, and Belinda is learning how to speak Mandarin and Betsy is showing her 4-h emu at the county fair? Really?

Is it really only *my* family that does this? Really??

I don't think it's just your family that does it.

My family prides itself on its secrets - except they don't tell anyone that 'cause, you know, it's a secret. So there's not a lot of communication amongst the various branches.

I hope, in my heart of hearts, that when that sort of letter is written, that it does things like put random words in capitals as though something important is being emphasized. Maybe that will explain why my students do it.

Maggie, my cousin's wife has been sending cheesy Christmas letters out since they got married a few years ago. We get to read about how he's with the same company but is at yet another location, how she's doing at work and in grad school, how big brother helps little brother, how their house addition is coming along, etc. Ugh!

My sister and I brainstormed a letter detailing the WONDERFUL year my family had. If only we could send it to her...

these letters creep me out--i have actually read too many that use the space to divulge horror--like cancer, divorce, a child's diagnosis of bi-polarity--they are so bad you almost laugh. just as the oh-so-happy family unit letter, who wants to read about your friend's chemotherapy for the holiday???
