Ten Things....

So this isn't particularly related to teaching, though it might turn up as an assignment for my incoming freshmen (nothing more cheery than asking 18 year olds to think about their mortality), but I thought this article from the New York Times on lists of things to do before you die was interesting - particularly the comments so far.

I'm not sure I've got a list I could easily put together, though perhaps I'll try one later today, as I'm sure an afternoon of meeting with students and administrators will absolutely crystallize the sense of my own mortality as well as the knowledge that I could be doing much more interesting things with whatever minutes I've got left.

'm trying to ignore the general discomfort that making lists gives me, and I'm having some trouble with it.

But here are at least a few things that have lingered around in the back of my head for years:
- get a novel published
- okay, actually writing the novel has proved to be a pretty big trick
- travel globally (though most of the places I'd list tend to be in Europe)
- give a big (larger than large lecture hall) speech
- learn to play a musical instrument
- sky-dive
- red-line the speedometer on a truly fast car

That's a good enough list for the moment. There are other things. And now that I've dived in, if you're reading this, feel obligated to put your own up.
